10. Japanese Persimmon

Scientific name: Diospyros kaki ‘Hachiya’

Colors: Shades of red, notably port wine red

Continue walking on the grassy area from black tupelo and look to the left. Even after its fall color fades away, Japanese persimmon trees still bear a distinct fruit that is known for its deep citrus flavor. The wood of Japanese persimmon is dense and prized for making golf clubs, pool cues, and musical instruments. American persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) can also be found at the Arboretum, with some trees of this species being older than the Arboretum itself!
