Keep going on the asphalt pathway beyond the redbud. Head on the dirt trail to the right marked by the Kallam Perennial Garden sign. You can view the sweetgum tree in the near distance just after the wooden bridge. Sweetgum (liquidambar) trees are very sensitive to precipitation and insect borers; consistent watering and pest management are hence necessary at the Arboretum. Along the brook emanating from Meyberg Waterfall, one can find the Burgundy, Festival, Palo Alto, and Rotundiloba varieties of sweetgum. Related species to sweetgum at the Arboretum include Hamamelis (witch hazel), Loropetalum (Chinese fringe flower), and Parrotia persica (Persian ironwood).
